Some time ago, we inherited a couch-bed.  I fought it at the time (because it was a transformer, was ugly, and weighed a metric crap-ton), but my wife has a hard time refusing generosity.

When Mike helped us move the furniture from our old place to the apartment, he picked up one end and immediately said, "Fuck you, Andy."  The couch then nearly killed me (literally) as we hauled it up the stairs.  I swore it would follow us no further--before we moved again, that bitch would die.

On Saturday I bought an "indestructible" 4lb mini-sledge (yes, I think of it as Mjolnir... sue me).  Two hours later, there was no chunk of the couch that wouldn't fit into a medium-sized suitcase.  Bending and snapping the steel tubing and rods took a little doing, but once the rivets were broken it wasn't that difficult.

So, Mike--if you're reading this, take heart.  Our foe is fallen, and will trouble us no more.

Cristin's grandfather died Sunday night.  He was 94, so nearly any cause can be considered 'natural.'  By all accounts he was a good man, and will be missed by many.  With his passing, neither my wife nor I have any living grandparents--all of mine were gone before I made it out of elementary school, so the concept of 'grandparent' will always seem a little abstract--and for Cristin, the loss is particularly hard.

She grabbed a redeye to Cleveland last night, and the girl and I will be joining her tomorrow.  We don't return until late Sunday night, which should make the signing of six-figure contracts on Monday even more surreal than expected...

At long last, the flurry of offer-counteroffer-amendment-agreement has finally been completed.  The money's been approved.  Contractors are being hired.  Other than the blue-collar bits, all that remains is signing on the dotted line at closing!

Oh yes, plans are being laid.

My three-year-old has discovered the Ramones.  Her favorites are, "I want a piece of data" (I wanna be sedated) and "Aye-Oh-Let-Go" (Blitzkrieg Bop).

She's also a big fan of Joey Ramone's cover of "What a Wonderful World."

Cristin, on the other hand, is particularly proud of Kiera's fondness for Beck.

I managed to finish in the top three at the 'Ard Boyz regionals in Washington, which means I'll be headed to Chicago in September for the nationals!

The complication, though, is that the tournament is on a Saturday, while we're supposed to close on our house (yet another huzzah) on the following Monday.

September should be.... interesting.

This weekend marked the first round of the annual 'Ard Boyz tournament for 40k, for which I've been frantically assembling and converting a Chaos Daemon army over the last few months.  The top three finishers from each participating Friendly Local Game Shop will be sent to the regional tournament in August, and from there to the finals in Chicago--where the ultimate victor will receive "an absurdly large pile of loot."

Yesterday, I slaughtered my way to the top over at Knightfall Games.  As a result, myself and a couple of my buddies will be heading up to Seattle next month for round two.  Now, I've been playing 40k for twenty-odd years (every odd-numbered edition, I should say), but I've never participated in any of the larger tournaments.  Obviously, I'm quite pleased with the results, and Cristin has declared her intention to show Kiera the famous fish markets while I'm busy playing toy soldiers with the rest of the NW.

Several things:

1)  It's now official:  Cristin will be fine.  So sez the Microneurosurgeon, Neurologist, and various pokes/proddings/scans/et cetera.

2)  The Beaverton Farmer's Market opened today.  There was a new booth, offering authentic Australian meat pies (!).  I inhaled one stuffed with roasted lamb and vegetables, and it was easily one of The Best Things I've Ever Had In My Mouth.  My saturday lunch plans are now set for the next several weeks.

3)  The Daemons are coming along just fine.  When the wife says, "that's really creepy," I know I must be doing something right.  Once I've got some finished conversions, I'll add 'em to my Flickr site.

4)  The new Star Trek flick was eight kinds of awesome.  Certainly more entertaining than many of the previous installments for the franchise.

5)  Tomorrow, we're driving out to the coast to visit the Aquarium.  Smart money's on the kid having a blast, as usual.

Had another check-in with the microneurosurgeon, today.

On the upside, surgery for Cristin is essentially a non-issue--nothing wrong with her that can be fixed with a knife.  Given the risks involved in spinal surgery, that's obviously a relief.

On the downside, many of her symptoms (pain, numbness, tingling, etc) are also associated with Multiple Fucking Sclerosis.

The Doc (who is awesome, and has earned our absolute trust), has ordered a brainscan and a consult with a Neurologist to figure out the next step.

Just submitted my app for the job I'm actually doing, rather than the one my title would imply.  Given conversations I've had with peers and bosses, I'd place my odds in the high 80% range... but with this economy, there could be a horde of overqualified competition to deal with.

Last Tuesday, while the wife and I were taking my mother to the airport after a weekend visit, an inattentive jackhole decided to rear-end us on the highway.  Mom and I are fine, but Cristin's back injury (from the last accident) has been aggravated.  On the upside, it doesn't seem to be anywhere near as extensive as the last time around.  On the downside, any further damage when you already have a ruptured disc ain't what you'd call a good thing.  Her pain and discomfort are currently being managed to a reasonable degree, and she is scheduled to have another steroid injection to help with the tissue inflamation at the nerve root.  As an added bonus, everyone is licensed and insured this time around.  If Kiera had been in the car, I honestly don't know whether I would be in police custody or not.

Cristin is also currently in Georgia this week, attending (as a presenter!) a conference put on by the Center for Disease Control--as a direct result of her recent performance at a similar conference in San Diego.  The director of the Strategic National Stockpile thinks she's quite the badass, it seems.  Oh, and her recent promotion and raise just kicked in, yesterday.  The upside, of course, is that her career continues to flourish to an astounding degree.  The downside is that I'm on my own with the kid for the week, we both miss her terribly, and I'm pretty damn worried about her spine.

Work on my end is going well.  I've been given plenty of encouragement by the boss and boss-boss to apply for the second Auditor position that  will be posted shortly.  The endorsement of the current Auditor certainly helps, too.  The snag is that it will be an externally listed position, so I expect plenty of competition from the outside.  HR will undoubtedly also have many nefarious influences on the selection process, but all told, I figure the odds of winning the spot are significantly better than even.

Oh, and on top of all that--Fuck You, Mister Daylight-Savings-Time-Inventor!  Right in the ear!

With a recent promotion--and its attendant 40% raise--Cristin has officially been upgraded to "Sugar Mama" status.

Between that and the rapidly plummeting housing market, our journey towards home ownership just made the jump to Ludicrous Speed.

In the latter part of my elementary school days, the various snack-food makers were frantically foisting "mini" versions of their products on the american market.  By and large, they weren't any better or worse than their full-size kin--just more expensive.  Burger King, however, unleashed something glorious:

These bad boys were three for a buck, and they were far and away the finest product ever produced by BK.  For the summer that they were available, I was obsessed with the little bastards.

The other day, I heard that the King had re-released the burger bundles--sort of--in the form of their new "Burger Shots."  At that point, my choice of lunch was essentially made for me.  On the plus side, they're bigger than they were back in '87, and are still pretty darned cheap.  Unfortunately, the larger bun makes quite a difference.  Sure, memories are always a bit rosier than reality, but part of the appeal of the original was that the buns were relatively firm (each half being about as thick as the patty).  The buns on the modern version are about twice as thick (relatively speaking), so they come across as a little too soft and spongy.

For what they are, they're okay.  I guess.  *sigh*

On the upside, today I came across this:

If you can't tell, that's a cartoonishly large burger--with two pizzas for the bun.
